Cocos Islands, also known as Keeling Islands, is an Australian territory in the middle of the Indian Ocean. And it's not called Cocos Islands for anything! Before leaving for Cocos Islands, you need to see whether or not you need a visa to cross the border. Since the island is an Australian territory, the Australian visa policy is in place. Bear in mind that Australia has agreements in place that grant visa exemption for many countries. Citizens of some countries may need to apply for an ETA, an electronic travel authorization, before entering Australian territory.
At the same time, electronic visas called eVisitor passes that are available for all countries in the Schengen Area, and grants a 90-day stay. Citizens of New Zealand can access Cocos Islands with no restrictions ever since Australia and New Zealand signed the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement. All the other nationalities that are not visa exempt or eligible for an electronic visa must submit an application at their nearest diplomatic mission or embassy of Australia.
